History of Cyborg 009

Shotaro Ishinomori’s original Cyborg 009 manga began serialization in Shōnengahōsha’s Weekly King magazine in July 1964. It has been adapted into TV anime three times, in 1968, 1979, and 2001, as well as films in 1966, 1967, and 1980. Later works include the film 009 Re:Cyborg (2012), Cyborg 009 Call of Justice (2016), and a crossover OVA with Devilman in 2015.

Most recently, in April 2024, scriptwriter Masaki Tsuji and artist Masato Hayase launched a new manga titled Cyborg 009 Taiheiyō no Bōrei (Cyborg 009: Ghost of the Pacific), continuing Ishinomori’s universe.
