Production Team and Theme Song

The anime is directed by Hideki Ambo at studio Arect. The screenplay is written by Atsuhiro Tomioka (known for the Pokemon series), with CHARATEX and sanorin handling character design.

The theme song is titled “Taga Tame ni” (For Whom), performed by Kyoko, the lead vocalist of the rock band Barbee Boys. The song is rooted in the original 1979 Cyborg 009 TV anime theme, which was originally sung by Ken Narita and Koorogi ’73, with Ishinomori himself having written the lyrics.

The Legacy of Cyborg 009

The original Cyborg 009 manga first appeared in Shonengahosha‘s Weekly King magazine in July 1964. The story revolves around an organization called Black Ghost, which seeks to keep the world locked in perpetual war, abducting nine men and women and transforming them into cyborg soldiers — only for all nine to rise up and fight back against Black Ghost.

The manga has been adapted into anime TV series in 1968, 1979, and 2001, as well as theatrical films in 1966, 1967, and 1980. More recently, there was the film 009 Re:Cyborg (2012), Cyborg 009 Call of Justice (2016), and a crossover OVA with Devilman in 2015.

Additional spin-off manga include Cyborg 009 Bgooparts Delete by Tsuguo Okazaki, which ran from 2019 to 2022, and most recently Cyborg 009 Taiheiyo no Borei (Cyborg 009: Ghost of the Pacific) by Masaki Tsuji and Masato Hayase, which began serialization in April 2024.
