The TV anime Detective Conan (名探偵コナン) delivered one of its most emotionally charged episodes on October 10, 2026, when episode 1216 — titled “茜色の千秋楽 (Crimson Finale)” — finally gave fans the moment they had been waiting years, even decades, for: Heiji Hattori confessing his love to Kazuha Toyama.
About Detective Conan
Created by Gosho Aoyama and serialized in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday since 1994, Detective Conan follows high-school detective Shinichi Kudo, who is shrunk into a child’s body by a mysterious black-clad organization and must solve cases under the alias Conan Edogawa. Volume 109 of the manga is scheduled for release on October 16, 2026.
Episode Synopsis
Episode 1216 serves as the conclusion of a three-week consecutive murder case arc set at the Naniwa Arts Theater in Osaka. The case began when an actor was found dead in a suspicious fall, his body posed like a puppet with the eerie message “I am the demon of puppets” left at the scene. Two more victims followed, deepening the mystery.
Running parallel to the investigation was the long-anticipated romantic subplot. Heiji had resolved that this time he would finally tell Kazuha how he felt, inspired by learning that the observation deck of Naniwa Harukas was famous as a “confession spot” with a stunning sunset view. Aware that Shinichi had confessed to Ran in front of Big Ben in London, Heiji declared that as an Osaka native, he had to make his move in Osaka — and invited Kazuha to the tower.
As always, the murder case threatened to derail his plans, and even Conan braced for another failed attempt. But this time, fate cooperated. After cracking the case, Heiji made his way to the observation deck where Kazuha was waiting — and finally confessed. The two descended hand-in-hand, watched by Ran Mouri and Kazuha’s mother Sakura, in a quietly joyful scene that marked the end of years of near-misses and stubborn pride.
A Musical Tribute to Their Love Story
The moment was made even more poignant by the choice of background music: “Watatsuki-bashi ~Kimi Omou~” by Mai Kuraki, the theme song of the 2017 film Detective Conan: The Crimson Love Letter, which had centered on Heiji and Kazuha’s relationship. Kuraki had also contributed “Time after time ~Hana Mau Machi de~” to the 2003 film Crossroad in the Ancient Capital, which depicted Heiji’s first love. Having the same artist’s music accompany the couple’s entire romantic journey — and play at the moment their feelings were finally returned — was a deeply considered creative choice that resonated with longtime fans.
Fan Reactions
Social media erupted with celebration after the episode aired. Fans expressed their emotions with comments such as:
- “Heiji and Kazuha, congratulations! You truly deserve this!”
- “Finally! This day has actually come!”
- “How many years have I been waiting for this?!”
- “So glad nothing interrupted them this time.”
- “I’ve watched them all this time — I’m overwhelmed.”
- “I’m crying like a proud parent right now.”
Many fans also looked back fondly — and with some exasperation — at the countless times Heiji had fumbled his confession over the years, making this resolution all the sweeter.
