The official X account (formerly Twitter) of the magazine Manga Time Kirara, published by Houbunsha, announced last Thursday that the manga Dropout Idol Fruit Tart (Japanese title: Ochikobore Fruit Tart) by Sou Hamayumiba will end in just 3 more chapters.

The final chapter of the manga will be published in the Manga Time Kirara Carat September issue, which goes on sale this July. The magazine is also preparing a special send-off page collecting fan messages to celebrate the series’ conclusion.

Story

The series follows Ino Sakura, a first-year middle school student who heads to Tokyo chasing her dream of becoming an idol. She meets her fellow residents at the Nezumi boarding house: Roko, a child actress who never became famous; HAYU, a musician; and Nina, a model. The four band together to form a new idol unit called Fruit Tart to save their boarding house from foreclosure and prove themselves in the entertainment industry.

Publication History

The manga began as a one-shot in Manga Time Kirara Carat in 2014 before launching as an ongoing series in 2015. Volume 8, the latest collected volume, went on sale in December 2024.

Anime and Other Adaptations

The manga was adapted into an anime in 2020 with Funimation streaming the series; an English dub was also produced in 2021.

As for Hamayumiba, prior to this series she serialised the manga Hanayamata in Houbunsha’s Manga Time Kirara Forward from 2011, concluding it in 2018 with the final volume (Volume 10) released in April 2018. That manga was adapted into a TV anime by studio Madhouse in 2014, with Crunchyroll streaming the simulcast in Japan and Sentai Filmworks holding the English-dubbed home video rights from 2016. A smartphone app and a PlayStation Vita game were also developed in 2014.
