The collaboration program between the TV anime 「葬送のフリーレン」 (Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End) and Universal Studios Japan (USJ) officially opened on May 30, 2026. The program serves as the grand finale of Universal Cool Japan 2026.
One day earlier, on May 29, USJ held a Press Preview and Opening Ceremony featuring two voice actors well known to fans: Atsumi Tanezaki, the voice of Frieren, and Nobuhiko Okamoto, the voice of Himmel.
What Awaits Fans at USJ
The Press Preview introduced three new pieces of content for the first time:
- 「葬送のフリーレン ストーリー・ウォーク ~追憶の旅~」 — a walk-through storytelling attraction that lets visitors pass through Frieren’s world themselves
- 「葬送のフリーレン ~追憶のレストラン~」 — a new themed restaurant carefully decorated to match the series’ universe
- 「葬送のフリーレン×ストーリー・ライド ~鳥の魔物と馬車の旅~」 — a ride attraction that takes guests on a carriage journey with beloved characters
Impressions from the Voice Actors
Atsumi Tanezaki described how she felt after trying the attractions ahead of the public opening:
“Of course I was moved just to be in the same space as Frieren and her friends, but when I felt the real distance to the rock Fern pierced through, or when Frieren showed the magic that creates a field of flowers, there were many moments when I could barely hold back tears!”
Nobuhiko Okamoto felt the same way. He said:
“From the moment I stepped into the attraction, the scenery and atmosphere of the town were just like in the anime. Himmel’s statue and the flower-field magic were so beautiful I was speechless. I almost cried.”
More Details from the Event
Tanezaki also talked about the restaurant, saying the interior details were impressive, from hair ornaments reminiscent of Fern to pumpkins that looked as if they had been handled with magic. Okamoto especially praised the ride attraction, saying that hearing the characters talk while season 1 opening theme “Yūsha” by YOASOBI played would be something fans would not be able to resist.
At the opening ceremony, the two stood in front of Himmel’s statue and jointly declared the program open: “Let’s set out on an adventure! Universal Cool Japan — Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is now open!” They told fans that this is a place where everyone can fully experience the world of Frieren. Okamoto added, “I think fans will definitely enjoy it, because there are also ways to experience this work that I never imagined would be possible!”
