โปสเตอร์ภาพยนตร์ Adolescence of Utena

GKIDS announced last Thursday that it has acquired the theatrical screening rights for North America for Adolescence of Utena, the 1999 anime film based on the Revolutionary Girl Utena franchise. It will be screened in theaters across the United States on June 21-22 in the original Japanese version with English subtitles. Tickets are already on sale.

Synopsis

Utena enrolls at the prestigious Ohtori Academy with a dream of becoming a “prince,” and finds herself drawn into a secret student dueling society fighting to possess the “Rose Bride” — who is none other than Anthy, her own roommate. Compelling and fascinating in equal measure, Utena is pulled into a series of duels against formidable opponents while searching for the mysteries hidden behind Anthy and her own desires. As the bond between the two girls deepens, Utena’s hunger for freedom builds to a shattering revolution.

Background and Staff

The film was directed by Kunihiko Ikuhara and released in 1999 as a new story spun from the TV series of the same name that he had previously directed, adapted from the manga of Chiho Saito.

The work was developed by the creative collective known as Be-PaPas, comprised of multiple industry figures including Chiho Saito, Yoji Enokido (Bungo Stray Dogs, Star Driver), Shinya Hasegawa (Golden Time, Taboo Tattoo), Ikuhara (Sailor Moon, Yuri Kuma Arashi), and Yuichiro Oguro (Revolutionary Girl Utena: The Movie). The group developed both the manga and anime of Revolutionary Girl Utena in tandem.

Saito’s manga began serialization in Shogakukan’s Ciao magazine in 1996 and ran for a total of 5 volumes. In North America, Viz Media holds the license and handles distribution, including a Collector’s Edition release.

TV Series and Streaming

The original 39-episode TV anime aired in 1997 under Ikuhara’s direction. In North America, Central Park Media and later Nozomi Entertainment distributed it on DVD, with Nozomi Entertainment also releasing a Blu-ray edition. The series is currently available to stream on Nozomi Entertainment’s YouTube channel.

As for Adolescence of Utena, it was previously released in North America as Revolutionary Girl Utena: The Movie on DVD and VHS by Central Park Media, and is currently streaming on the RetroCrush platform via Funimation, with Tubi also having offered streaming access previously.
