GKIDS has issued a formal apology to audiences after a subtitling glitch in the DCP for The Last Blossom caused English subtitles to appear several seconds out of sync during screenings on Sunday, disrupting showings across North America.

The Subtitle Issue and Immediate Response

According to GKIDS, the company became aware of the problem on Sunday and immediately instructed theaters to pull shows from sale and issue refunds to affected customers. By Monday, a corrected version of the film had been distributed to theaters. While some venues were able to update their screenings in time, others were unable to do so, resulting in canceled shows. GKIDS had originally planned to screen the film only on August 30–31.

GKIDS Statement

“On Sunday, GKIDS became aware of a subtitling glitch in our DCP for The Last Blossom. We immediately instructed theaters to remove shows from sale and issue refunds to affected customers until we could identify and resolve the issue. On Monday, we were able to provide a corrected version of the film to theaters. While some were able to update their screenings, others were unfortunately unable to do so in time, resulting in canceled shows. We deeply apologize for this issue and to all moviegoers affected, whether you attended a screening or had one canceled. We brought The Last Blossom to cinemas because it is a distinctive and wonderfully original work, and we are sorry that we fell short of the presentation that audiences expect. GKIDS believes the theatrical experience is central to film culture, and we know the time and sacrifice fans make to share this experience together. We are currently reviewing options including makeup screenings of the corrected version, to ensure audiences can experience this special film. Thank you for your patience and support as we work to put this right.”

cocoon Confirmed to Open September 4 as Planned

Amid concerns about cancellations, GKIDS also addressed the status of cocoon – One Summer of Girlhood (cocoon Aru Natsu no Shōjo-tachi Yori), the anime adaptation of Machiko Kyō‘s Cocoon manga. The company confirmed the film will open in North American theaters on September 4 as originally scheduled, noting that minor scheduling adjustments by individual theaters in the lead-up to an opening are common and may result in added or changed locations.

GKIDS will screen cocoon in both Japanese with English subtitles and with an English dub. The company also plans to release the anime on home video.
