First Japanese Film “Filmed for IMAX”

Godzilla Minus Zero is the first Japanese film to meet the standard required to advertise itself as “Filmed for IMAX,” marking a landmark achievement for Japanese cinema.

Simultaneous Global Release

The film opens in Japan on November 3, a date that falls on Culture Day, a national holiday — and also “Godzilla Day,” the anniversary of the original Godzilla film’s release on November 3, 1954. Godzilla Minus One similarly debuted in Japan on November 3, 2023.

GKIDS and TOHO will release the film in North America on November 6, making this the first time a Japan-produced Godzilla film will open in Japan and North America in the same week. The film will also open during the same week in Latin America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Australia, and New Zealand. Additional international release dates will be announced at a later time. TOHO acquired GKIDS in October 2024.

Production Details

Takashi Yamazaki returns as director, screenwriter, and VFX supervisor, with Naoki Satō back to compose the score. Production is currently underway at TOHO Studios, with ROBOT producing and Shirogumi Inc. handling visual effects.

The Legacy of Godzilla Minus One

Godzilla Minus One has grossed over US$116 million worldwide, including an estimated US$57.1 million in the United States alone, making it the third highest-grossing foreign-language film in the U.S. as of 2024. The film won the Best Visual Effects award at the 96th Academy Awards in March 2024 — the first Japanese film to win in that category and the first Godzilla film ever nominated for an Oscar.

The film and its black-and-white version, Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color, are currently streaming on Netflix worldwide. In Japan, both versions stream exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.

Yamazaki’s Next Project

Beyond Godzilla Minus Zero, Yamazaki’s first English-language film, Grandgear, is set to open on February 18, 2028.
