The Gundam Conference Spring 2026 livestream event, held last Friday, unveiled a series of plans and upcoming projects in the lead-up to the 50th anniversary of the Gundam franchise in 2029.

Short Video “A Boy With Gundam”

One of the highlights of the event was the premiere of “A Boy With Gundam,” a short promotional video for the “Road to 50” project, created exclusively to celebrate the 50th anniversary. Directed by Tsukuro Hayakawa, the video tells a story seen through the eyes of three generations of Gundam fans, accompanied by music from the band PEOPLE 1. English subtitles are available for the song portions and can be toggled as needed.

Gundam-Con

Japanese and international fans have a major event to look forward to: Gundam-Con, to be held at Makuhari Messe in Chiba Prefecture, Japan, from January 9–11, 2027. The event will feature exhibition booths, competitions, licensed merchandise, and live music performances. Entry will require a paid ticket, and registration will be handled through a lottery system. The team stated that further details will be announced this summer.

Beyond Japan, there are also plans to hold Gundam-Con events in various regions around the world after the Japan event concludes in January 2027.

Gundam Day and Other Activities

The Japan Anniversary Association (unofficial) has designated April 7 of every year as “Gundam Day” starting from 2027, coinciding with the date that Mobile Suit Gundam first aired on April 7, 1979.

In addition, the National Museum of Nature and Science, Tokyo has plans for a special exhibition honoring Yoshiyuki Tomino, the creator of the Gundam franchise, in 2029.

The Life-Size Unicorn Gundam’s Final Movement

The full-scale RX-0 Unicorn Gundam statue that has stood on Odaiba Island in Tokyo since its debut at DiverCity Tokyo in September 2017 will be decommissioned in late August 2026. Before its removal, the team will attach a special “Finale Version” sticker set to the statue as a final send-off.

Other Notable Projects

  • Remaster Project: Plans to remaster works across the franchise, starting with the earliest TV series installments.
  • Gundam Landmark Project: A large-scale project to build dedicated fan locations across Japan.
  • Hololive Productions Collaboration: New visuals and VTuber names have been revealed for an expanded collaboration, with multiple members from Hololive English joining the project.
