The Edo-period action anime 「火喰鳥 羽州ぼろ鳶組」(Hi-Kui-Dori: Ushū Borotobigumi), which aired in Winter 2026, is now fully available to stream on Netflix, with all episodes available from May 22, 2026.
Source Material and Story
This work is adapted from the first novel in the 羽州ぼろ鳶組 series by Imamura Shogo, a Naoki Prize-winning author — and also his debut work as a writer. Imamura is likewise the original author of Ikusagami, which is currently streaming on Netflix, meaning fans can now immerse themselves in both works of his universe at the same time.
The story draws inspiration from the real historical event known as the “Great Meiwa Fire.” It follows Matsunaga Gengo, once the most celebrated samurai firefighter in Edo, nicknamed the “Fire-Eating Bird” (火喰鳥) — but who, for reasons of his own, retired from that life. He is then recruited by the Shinjo domain to take charge of a firefighting brigade that is broke, understaffed, and without reputation.
Spurred on by his young wife Miyuki, Gengo accepts the post and sets about rebuilding the ragged brigade. He gathers a motley crew of eccentric members who are mocked throughout Edo as “ぼろ鳶” (shabby kites), yet Gengo holds firm to his conviction: “We will not let a single life be lost.” Meanwhile, mysterious fires called “Fox Fires” (狐火) of unknown origin keep breaking out across Edo, and the undaunted brigade must race against an ever-encroaching disaster.
Original author Imamura Shogo stated with pride that this work will “set the hearts of viewers ablaze through men who refuse to give up,” and expressed his belief that it is the finest anime and manga ever born from a historical novel.
