The TV anime Kanata kara (彼方から), one of the most anticipated fantasy titles of the fall 2026 season, is now streaming on multiple platforms in Japan. Here is a complete guide to where you can watch it, how much it costs, and what the series is about.

What Is Kanata kara?

Kanata kara is based on the shoujo manga of the same name by Kyoko Hikawa, serialized in Hakusensha’s LaLa magazine from 1991 to 2002 across 14 collected volumes. The series sold over 4 million copies and won the Seiun Award in 2004. Widely regarded as a pioneering work in the “modern girl transported to another world” genre, it has been adapted into a TV anime to commemorate the 35th anniversary of its serialization. The anime is directed by Noriyuki Abe and produced by Studio DEEN, with original author Kyoko Hikawa serving as supervisor. It began airing on TOKYO MX on October 4, 2026.

Story Synopsis

High school student Noriko Tachiki is suddenly transported to an unfamiliar world. She is rescued from a monster attack by Izark Kia Tarj, a wandering warrior. In this world, every nation is searching for the one known as the “Awakening” — a being prophesied to awaken the “Tenjouki,” a destructive entity. When Izark realizes that Noriko is the Awakening, the two begin traveling together despite the language barrier between them, slowly forging a deep bond along the way.

Highlights

• The language barrier: Noriko and Izark’s relationship, built entirely without a shared language, forms the emotional core of the story.
• A legendary source manga: The original series is a beloved classic, now animated for the first time with the author’s direct involvement as supervisor.
• Theme songs: Opening theme “逃光行” by Genin wa Jibun ni Aru.; ending theme “光の側で” by Nanashi no Tarou.
