The team behind the anime film Made in Abyss: Mezameru Shinpi (Made in Abyss: The Awakening Mystery) has released the first official teaser clip for the project. Mezameru Shinpi serves as the first part of a new film trilogy in the Made in Abyss franchise and is set to open in Japanese theaters on October 23.
2019 Films to Screen Together as a Limited Run
Alongside this announcement, both 2019 compilation films will return to Japanese theaters for a limited two-week engagement. Made in Abyss: Journey’s Dawn (Made in Abyss: Tabidachi no Yoake) will screen from May 22 through June 4, while Made in Abyss: Wandering Twilight (Made in Abyss: Hōrō Suru Tasogare) will run from May 29 through June 11.

Masayuki Kojima, known for directing Black Bullet and Tibetan Dog, returns to direct at studio Kinema Citrus (My Happy Marriage, The Rising of the Shield Hero). Hideyuki Kurata (Samurai Flamenco, The World God Only Knows) returns to handle the script, while Kazuchika Kise (Ghost in the Shell: Arise Alternative Architecture, xxxHOLiC) and Yuka Kuroda (Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun) co-design the characters.

Franchise History
Kadokawa first announced a follow-up project to Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun (Made in Abyss: Retsujitsu no Ōgonkyō) back in January 2023. The Golden City of the Scorching Sun was the second TV anime season, which aired from July 2022 and concluded with a feature-length special episode in the same September.
Before that, the first TV anime season of 13 episodes premiered in Japan in July 2017, and the theatrical film Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul opened in Japan in January 2020, earning over 1.02 billion yen in its opening week.
Made in Abyss Story Summary
The world of Made in Abyss features an enormous, mysterious pit known as the “Abyss,” a one-of-a-kind expanse as yet unexplored in its entirety. Deep within it live fantastical creatures and priceless ancient relics that modern humans cannot reproduce. Those brave enough to venture down into this chasm are known as “Cave Raiders.” Riko, an orphan girl living in the city of Orth at the edge of the Abyss, dreams of becoming a Cave Raider like her mother. One day, during a routine survey, she encounters a robot-like figure with the appearance of a young boy — and this marks the beginning of an ever-greater adventure.
