Visual Arts, the parent company of game brand Key, has issued an official statement revealing that renowned scenario writer and composer Jun Maeda is currently hospitalized with throat cancer.
Treatment Approach
According to the statement, Maeda carefully considered his condition and treatment outlook before deciding to forgo aggressive treatment in favor of palliative care. The decision reflects his wish to conserve his strength and dedicate as much of his remaining energy as possible to creative work.
Heaven Burns Red Update
Regarding Heaven Burns Red — the game for which Maeda serves as original concept creator, head scenario writer, and music producer — Visual Arts confirmed that he has completed the main story script through the first half of Chapter 6, and has also finished writing all the key story beats through to the conclusion of Chapter 6. The lyrics and compositions for the songs accompanying the first half of Chapter 6 are likewise complete.
However, the company noted that scenario writing and music production for any content beyond that point may not be possible for Maeda, depending on how his condition progresses.
New YouTube Music Project
Visual Arts also revealed that Maeda had originally planned a long-term music project to be released on YouTube. Given his awareness that the time available to him for creative work is limited, he has revised the plan to focus on completing the songs he currently has in mind as quickly as possible. The tracks will be released sequentially on YouTube, in accordance with Maeda’s strong personal wishes.
Visual Arts has also published a mailing address on their official website for fans who wish to send words of encouragement to Maeda.
