ufotable has announced the original voice cast that will return for the anime film adaptation of Type-Moon‘s visual novel Mahotsukai no Yoru (魔法使いの夜 / Witch on the Holy Night), with the announcement made last Saturday.

Story and Main Characters

Mahotsukai no Yoru is set in the late 1980s. The main protagonist is Aoko Aozaki, one of two heirs to a lineage of modern mages, who has little interest in magic but is suddenly designated as the successor to her family’s magical arts — and must begin training under the watchful eye of Alice Kuonji, a young woman who lives in a quiet mansion on a hill.

Aoko must take on both the study of magic and the duties of student council president at their school simultaneously. Along the way she meets Soujuurou Shizuki, a new transfer student who seems completely out of touch with the modern world, and must also contend with the schemes of Touko Aozaki, her elder sister who feels her birthright has been stolen.

Connection to the “Nasuverse”

Mahotsukai no Yoru is one of the works that forms the shared universe of Type-Moon — known among English-speaking fans as the “Nasuverse” — which clearly encompasses titles such as Tsukihime, Fate/stay night, and The Garden of Sinners. A young Aoko appears as the first teacher of Shiki, the protagonist of Tsukihime, while an adult Touko serves as the employer of Shiki Ryougi, the heroine of The Garden of Sinners.

Background of the Work

Mahotsukai no Yoru is one of the earliest works born from the collaboration between Kinoko Nasu and illustrator Takashi Takeuchi in the mid-1990s, before the two founded Type-Moon. It originally began as a story shared informally among friends, without any formal release, until Type-Moon developed it into a full visual novel with graphics by Hirokazu Koyama and released it in April 2012, with plans for two additional chapters.

Most recently, Type-Moon brought the title to the Steam platform in December 2023. Prior to that, Aniplex had released PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch versions in Western markets alongside a Japanese release in December 2022, with combined sales across both platforms surpassing 150,000 copies worldwide.
