Details of the exhibition layout and merchandise for 「細田守の原点/展」 (Mamoru Hosoda no Genten-ten), also described as an exhibition exploring the “origins” of director Mamoru Hosoda, have been officially revealed.
Tracing the Roots of Hosoda’s Creative Journey
This exhibition does not simply showcase Hosoda’s celebrated works — it also reaches back to the era before The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (時をかける少女), displaying pieces created during his time as a student director. Also on view is independent animation he made on 8mm film from his middle school years, as well as live-action footage and oil paintings from his time studying at the Kanazawa College of Art and Craft. More than 300 items are featured, ranging from storyboards and layouts to production artwork and character design sheets for the director’s films.
An Immersive OZ World from Summer Wars
One of the major highlights is a dedicated display zone where visitors can step into the world of “OZ” — the virtual internet world from the film Summer Wars (サマーウォーズ) — with full immersion. The space takes advantage of ceiling heights of up to 5 meters to create a spectacular atmosphere, and features life-size figures of King Kazma and Love Machine prominently placed within the zone.
Over 100 Exclusive Items
The event will feature more than 100 original items for sale, including merchandise using artwork from director Hosoda’s films, character mascots, and items that won acclaim from the colorful virtual sky. Notable merchandise includes:
- Key visuals board featuring avatars from Summer Wars
- Messenger bags and tote bags, a collaboration between Manhattan Portage and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
A promotional video clip for the exhibition has also been released.
