About MAO
Rumiko Takahashi launched the MAO manga in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday in May 2019. The 29th compiled volume was released on June 18. Viz Media has been publishing the English edition since 2021.
The story follows Nanoka, a girl who slips through a portal into a supernatural Taisho-era Japan, where she crosses paths with the aloof exorcist MAO. As the two investigate a string of gruesome murders, Nanoka uncovers new abilities within herself and learns that MAO — along with his sword — is cursed by a cat demon named Byōki.
Takahashi is the creator of beloved titles including Urusei Yatsura, Maison Ikkoku, Ranma 1/2, and InuYasha, many of which have inspired anime and live-action adaptations worldwide.
