Mononoke: From TV Screen to Film Trilogy
Mononoke (モノノ怪) is an anime that aired on television in the 2000s and continues to hold fans’ hearts today. The story follows a mysterious man known as the Kusuriuri (Medicine Seller), who travels the land to exorcise mononoke, evil spirits born from human grudges and intense emotions.
In 2024, the new film trilogy began with 劇場版モノノ怪 唐傘 (Mononoke the Movie: Karakasa), whose first chapter achieved an impressively long theatrical run. It was followed by 劇場版モノノ怪 第二章 火鼠 (Mononoke the Movie Chapter 2: Hinezumi), which opened in March 2025 and received enthusiastic praise both in and outside Japan. Both films won the Audience Award for Best Animated Feature at Canada’s Fantasia International Film Festival for two consecutive years.
Final Chapter “蛇神” Opens May 29, 2026
The conclusion of the trilogy, 劇場版モノノ怪 第三章 蛇神 (Mononoke the Movie Chapter 3: Jagami), is scheduled to open on May 29, 2026. The story will take the Kusuriuri into the Ooku to reveal the “greatest secret” that has long been hidden.
