Akita Shoten released Nekooni to Hakugyoku: Wataru Ransei wa Onikakari (猫鬼と白玉～渡る乱世は鬼がかり～) Volume 1 on June 16. The new series comes from mangaka Kame, previously known for Battuta Sensei no Gourmet Annaito.
Story
Set in late-9th-century China during the twilight years of the Tang dynasty, the story centers on Baiyù (白玉), a solitary young girl plagued by bad luck. Whenever something unpleasant happens to her, she retreats into an imaginary “trial in her head” as a coping mechanism.
One day, while brooding alone in the woods, Baiyù is attacked by bandits — and at that very moment, a gui (鬼), a supernatural spirit taking the form of a cat, escapes from a jar the bandits were carrying and possesses her body. What follows is a survival romance set against the backdrop of a crumbling empire.
The series is currently serialized in Monthly Mystery Bonita.
