TVアニメ 『日本三國』(Nihon Sankoku) Episode 7, titled “Night Raid on Kanazawa” (金沢夜襲), aired on May 18, 2026 and immediately set social media ablaze. In particular, the intense and emotionally resonant scenes between Sugao Sei and Tonostugi drew viewers’ feelings to the surface so powerfully that comments like “So emotional!” and “This pairing is the absolute best!” flooded every platform.
About Nihon Sankoku
Nihon Sankoku is a manga by Matsuki Ikka, serialized in the “Manga ONE” app and on the “Ura Sunday” website by Shogakukan. Set in a near-future Japan where civilization has crumbled from nuclear war, natural disasters, and corrupt governance, the country has been torn into three rival power blocs. Ordinary local government official Misumi Aoki rises to fight in order to reunite Japan through vast knowledge and sharp wit. The manga has surpassed 10 million copies in circulation and has been adapted into a TV anime directed by Terasawa Kazuaki and produced by Studio Kafka.
Episode 7 Summary (Spoilers)
The episode opens with tragedy — Castle Kusuriwji, though defended with fierce courage, falls after holding out for only seven hours. Commander Sato Yoshinaka and vice-commander Hiraizumi Hina lose their lives along with many soldiers. Fans flooded social media with grief: “That hurt so much…” and “They fought all the way to the end.”
On the other side, Riuming receives word that every subsidiary castle in Okuwetsu has fallen. The line “A lost land can be reclaimed, but the dead cannot be revived” left an especially deep impression on viewers, many of whom wrote: “That hit hard” and “Some things are worth protecting even at the cost of territory.”
Meanwhile, in Kanazawa where Tonostugi Taira and Sugao Sei are stationed together, tensions steadily mount. When Nagakao Taketojun learns that Riuming has retreated and that Nakamine Chiriyo’s main forces have yet to cross the Tedori River, he launches a night raid without orders from Sakuratohra. Most fans saw this as a reckless decision, with comments like “Too hasty” and “This is going to fail.”
Meanwhile, Sugao is still bound but manages a brief exchange with Tamaki Junichi, one of Tonostugi’s subordinates, who reveals he has four children of his own and speaks openly about the injustice of ethnic discrimination in positions of power. Some viewers were warmed by the conversation, but many sensed foreboding — and that fear proved justified when Seii soldiers burst in and cut Tamaki down instantly.
Even with his hands bound, Sugao manages to hold off four enemies at once with superhuman physical ability. Viewers were stunned: “He can do THAT while tied up?!” and “This man is clearly a superhero.” But when a gun is aimed at him the situation looks desperate — until Tonostugi fires first, saving Sugao’s life.
The Emotional Peak: Tonostugi Apologizes and Sugao Carries Him to Safety
In the shadow of Tamaki’s death, Tonostugi reveals that Tamaki sacrificed himself to protect him. Viewers were moved and felt guilty for ever doubting Tonostugi: “I’m sorry for thinking he was a bad kid,” many posted online.
Shocked by the loss of his subordinate yet understanding that he cannot return to Yamato alone, Tonostugi cuts Sugao’s bonds and bows his head in apology for what he has done. The moment prompted a wave of praise: “So mature to actually apologize!” and “This kid has really grown.” Sugao then carries the injured Tonostugi — wounded in the leg — on his back as they flee. The scene was declared the highlight of the episode, with comments pouring in: “So emotional,” “They’re like father and son,” and “This pairing is the absolute best!”
The Appearance of Nakamine Chiriyo
As the two are fleeing, Taketojun blocks their path and opens fire. Sugao leaps to shield Tonostugi — it appears to be the end — but then a shot rings out and it is Taketojun himself who falls. The shooter is Nakamine Chiriyo, a left-flank general who had been hiding in Kanazawa on orders from Kaku Yasuaki. Though the character had appeared in Episode 3, many viewers still had not recognized him: “Who is this?” and “Wait — is that the one who was reported as suspicious before?!” were common reactions. Learning it was the same character made the twist all the more surprising.
Five days after Taketojun leaves the story, Aoki and Yoshitsune observe protests growing alarmingly intense and question how news of the battle spread so quickly. Aoki recalls Kaku’s words — “Sleep on kindling and gaze at the stars; that is the key to victory” — then sprints off as though he has just discovered something. That is precisely where Episode 7 ends.
Overall Fan Reception
Episode 7 earned overwhelming praise: “So enjoyable it felt like it flew by,” “Outstanding every single week,” and “Gets me every time.” The lingering questions are who exactly is stirring up Yamato’s people — could it be Taira Tonogi, the Minister of the Interior? — and what did Aoki discover? Find out in Episode 8 on Monday, May 25, 2026.
