The Tokyo Anime Next event, held at Tokyo Tatemono Brillia Hall, announced a brand-new anime awards ceremony called the “Nippon Anime Awards,” scheduled for November 21, 2027 at SGC Hall Ariake.
The event’s stated vision is to “create a timeless anime award that represents Japan and stands the test of time, marking the first step toward that future.” The ceremony is being organized by the Association of Japanese Animations (AJA).
Background and Context
The announcement was made during Tokyo Anime Next, a special one-time event held in Tokyo from October 30 to November 2.
The new awards come in the wake of the Tokyo Anime Award Festival (TAAF) announcing in September that it had concluded its run as of last March. The final edition, TAAF 2026, took place from March 13–16.
TAAF launched in 2014 as an independent festival and ran for 13 editions. It was itself an evolution of the Tokyo Anime Award, which had been part of the Tokyo International Anime Fair from 2002 to 2013.
The Nippon Anime Awards thus represents the next chapter in Japan’s long tradition of nationally recognized anime honors.
