ทีเซอร์วิชวลAnime Obocchamakun REBORN แสดงภาพชามะขี่หน่วยเต่า Noriki-tai

The beloved rich-kid comedy is making its comeback: Obocchamakun REBORN, a brand-new anime series based on Kobayashi Yoshinori‘s classic manga, has been announced for broadcast on the TV Asahi network in 2027.

From India, With Love

Obocchamakun originally launched as a manga in Monthly Corocoro Comic (Shogakukan) in 1986, following the slapstick misadventures of Gobo Chama, the outrageously wealthy young heir to the global Gobo Zaibatsu fortune. The first anime adaptation aired on TV Asahi starting in 1989, and Chama’s signature made-up “Chama-go” dialect became a nationwide craze among Japanese children.

The unlikely spark for REBORN came from India. When the original anime series was broadcast there in 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic, it became a massive hit — its bright, absurdist humor resonating deeply with audiences during a difficult time. The overwhelming demand for a sequel prompted Indian broadcasters to fly to Japan and personally appeal to Kobayashi, whose enthusiasm for the project led to an official Japan-India co-production.

What to Expect

The new series will adapt manga storylines that were never animated in the original run, alongside a wealth of brand-new original stories — all developed under the full supervision of creator Kobayashi. Kojiro Chie, who voiced Gobo Chama in the original anime, returns to reprise the role.

  • Original Work: “Obocchamakun” by Kobayashi Yoshinori
  • Producer: TV Asahi
  • Production Studio: Green Gold Animation
  • Production Cooperation: Shin-Ei Animation, Sony Pictures Networks India
  • Cast: Kojiro Chie as Gobo Chama (Obocchamakun)

Teaser Visual and PV

A teaser visual and teaser PV have also been released. The visual features Chama riding his turtle unit “Noriki-tai,” accompanied by the punny tagline “カメバック。” — a play on the Japanese word for turtle (kame) and the English word “comeback.” The teaser PV captures Chama greeting viewers in his signature Chama-go dialect with “Gobusa-TANGO” (a wordplay on “long time no see”).

Comments

Kobayashi Yoshinori (Original Creator)

The generation that knows Obocchamakun well is in their 40s and 50s. But their kids are already becoming fans too — I’ve had children show up backstage with battered old paperbacks for me to sign, and it’s just the cutest thing. I’m really curious how kids today will receive it. Hardly anyone aspires to be a gag manga artist anymore, so this might feel genuinely fresh to them. If even one kid reads this and decides they want to draw comedy manga, that would mean everything. REBORN — born again. I hope it’s such a massive hit that I can’t even leave my house!

Kojiro Chie (Voice of Gobo Chama)

No matter how many years have passed, Obocchamakun has lived on in so many people’s memories — and Chama has always lived on inside me. My voice and energy from back then are still fully there! With all the experience I’ve gained since, I feel like I can collaborate with the staff even more deeply than before. The recording sessions were so joyful they felt precious. I can’t wait for it to air! “Pokkun is back — let’s all watch together!”
