Netflix has unveiled Parasyte -TAMIYA-, a new live-action series based on Hitoshi Iwaaki‘s acclaimed manga Parasyte (寄生獣), set for worldwide exclusive streaming in 2027.
An Untold Story
Rather than retelling the manga’s main plot, Parasyte -TAMIYA- is an original story told from the perspective of Tamiya Ryoko — the singular parasite who sought coexistence with humanity. The series follows her across three dimensions: as a human before her infestation, as a parasite who assumes the identity of a high school teacher while absorbing vast knowledge of human society, and as a being torn by inner conflict after encountering Izumi Shinichi and his symbiotic parasite Migi. That encounter plants the idea that coexistence with humans may be the key to parasite survival.
The series revisits the foundational questions Iwaaki’s manga posed over 30 years ago — “What does it mean to be human?” and “Can we coexist with something fundamentally different?” — questions that resonate even more urgently in an era of emotionless AI.
Staff and Cast
Korean filmmaker Yeon Sang-ho, known for Gas Human and Netflix’s Parasyte: The Grey (2024), serves as planner and co-writer alongside Ryu Yong-jae. South Korean production company WOWPOINT, which produced both of those projects, returns as planning producer. Japanese production is handled by Episcope.
Two directors share the helm: Kakimoto Kensaku, praised for his visual and musical sensibility, and Nakagawa Kazuhiro, whose strengths lie in narrative structure and shot composition. Executive producers are Sato Yoshihiro (Netflix) and Yang Yumin.
The lead role of Tamiya Ryoko is played by Kutsuna Shiori, a Japanese actress with extensive experience in both Japan and the United States and a strong background in science-fiction projects.
A Multifaceted Performance
Yeon Sang-ho explained his decision to cast Kutsuna, noting that the role demands portraying three distinct versions of the same character. He commented:
“She brilliantly performed the process by which a non-human being comes to understand both humans and its own existence.”
Kutsuna herself reflected on the experience:
“The role of Tamiya Ryoko was the most challenging of my acting career. During the six months I spent living as Tamiya, I encountered many new emotions, gained countless insights, and grew both as a person and as an actress.”
Executive Producer Sato Yoshihiro added that the series aims to retell Tamiya’s story — a parasite who, while raising a human baby, forged bonds and sought coexistence — as an exploration of whether innate nature can be rewritten by experience.
Parasyte Adaptation History
Iwaaki’s manga, serialized in Kodansha’s Afternoon magazine, was previously adapted into a TV anime series in 2014 and a two-part live-action film in November 2014 and April 2015. Netflix then reimagined the story in a contemporary South Korean setting with Parasyte: The Grey, which launched globally in April 2024.
