The official website for Shinei Animation’s stop-motion anime Pui Pui Molcar announced on Monday that the franchise will receive a brand-new special to mark its fifth anniversary. A teaser trailer and a promotional visual featuring Potato were unveiled alongside the announcement.
Original Creator Returns to Direct
Tomoki Misato, the creator who directed the anime’s first season, is returning to the director’s chair for the franchise for the first time since that debut run. He is also penning the screenplay himself. The special’s story centers on Choco, whose in-universe birthday happens to fall on the very day of the announcement — August 10.
About Pui Pui Molcar
Pui Pui Molcar first premiered in January 2021 as part of TV Tokyo’s Kinder TV children’s variety program. The series follows guinea pigs who have transformed into cars — the name “Molcar” blends the English word “car” with “morumotto” (モルモット), the Japanese word for guinea pig. Its signature charm lies in its use of wool felt stop-motion puppets, a craft-driven technique that set it apart from the moment it debuted.
The first season marked Misato’s directorial debut on an animated TV series. He wrote the script and co-storyboarded alongside Hana Ono and Kei Sato. The animation team consisted of Misato, Ikuko Iwatsuki, Kei Sato, and Makoto Takano, while the art team included Misato, Iwatsuki, Sato, Harune Satō, and Michiko Kaihatsu. Music was composed by Shōta Kowashi.
Franchise Milestones
- Netflix launched the series worldwide (excluding select Asian territories) in March 2021.
- Compilation film Tobidase! Narase! Pui Pui Molcar opened in Japanese theaters in July 2021.
