Re:ゼロから始める異世界生活 (Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World) Season 4 is split into two cours: 《喪失編 — Arc of Destruction》 (11 episodes) and 《奪還編 — Arc of Reclamation》 (8 episodes). Episode 73, which aired on May 20, marks the 7th episode of the first arc, and it did not disappoint fans hungry for shock moments.
Julius and a Wound That Won’t Heal
Continuing from episode 72, where the young knight “Julius Juukulius” was struck down by Reid Astrea and lost both his physical form and his pride as a knight, Emilia and Subaru ordered him to rest and recover without delay.
Emilia tearfully pleaded:
“Julius has to stay here and rest until his wound heals. Promise me!”
Viewers reacted with “Emilia is so motherly” and “Julius is really growing up,” while others teased Julius with “Hey, how can that kid smile like that?”
On Beatrice’s side — who had been tirelessly worrying over him while he was ill — she secretly struck him with her fist out of sheer frustration. Subaru noticed and burst out laughing before restraining her. This lighter moment gave viewers a much-needed laugh amid the tense atmosphere, drawing comments like “Beatrice is adorable lol” and “Beatrice is becoming more of a little girl (lol).”
Anastasia… or Echidna?
The tense mood did not last long. When Subaru got up and went looking, he found that Anastasia Hoshin, who should have been resting in her room, was gone. She had left the room and been led by a “mysterious” force into a maze-like corridor — where Anastasia stood alone in the wind.
The problem is that Anastasia’s body was currently possessed by Echidna, a spirit who could not return the body to its rightful owner as she should have done. Subaru looked at her with suspicious eyes. Viewers agreed that “Echidna is genuinely creepy” and “the atmosphere is loaded with unease.”
In turn, Echidna herself questioned Subaru’s identity, because his abilities were far beyond normal. Fans sided with this observation: “Fair enough — from someone else’s perspective, Subaru seems really suspicious.”
What kept viewers glued was the performance of Ueda Kana (植田佳奈), the voice actress who had to play three roles in one episode — the real Anastasia, Echidna possessing Anastasia’s body, and Echidna pretending to be Anastasia — with this Echidna also needing to mimic the vocal style of Sakamoto Maaya (坂本真綾), Anastasia’s original voice actress. Viewers were stunned: “Ueda-san is genuinely incredible — how did she play 3 roles in one episode!?”
Julius Gets Hurt Again
Julius, now recovered and joining the conversation, learned the truth about Anastasia from Subaru and immediately acted — but then cut himself off mid-action. Subaru was grabbed and shaken by Emilia and Beatrice, who stared him down before he finally cried out:
“Wait — does this mean… I was summoned to another world again!?”
This line made viewers simultaneously go quiet and burst into excitement. Comments flooded in: “What!?”, “What just happened?”, “I haven’t felt this shocked in ages”, “This is the start of hell”, “Re:Zero’s darkest event has arrived!”, and “Is this the part that’s haunting me!?”
It was certainly no ordinary cliffhanger, and the answer to what happened to Subaru is expected to be revealed in the next episode airing on May 27.
