Yet another specially designed manhole cover from the iconic series Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon (美少女戦士セーラームーン) by Takeuchi Naoko has been installed — the latest design, named “10 Sailor Warriors (Rainbow)”, has been placed near JR Takanawa Gateway Station in the Minato area of Tokyo, as of May 25.
Sailor Moon Manhole Covers in Minato
The Minato district has long been central to the Sailor Moon story, making it a pilgrimage destination for fans around the world. As of March 2024, five specially designed manhole covers had already been installed at various locations across the district:
- “Sailor Moon & Tuxedo Mask” — near the Azabu-Juban shopping street
- “5 Sailor Warriors (Silver)” — in Shiba Park (in front of Minato Library)
- “Usagi & Ami & Rei & Makoto & Minako” — in front of Toyo Eiwa Jogakuin (elementary and kindergarten)
- “5 Sailor Warriors (Pale Green)” — near Tokyo Tower, Minato (in front of Shiba Fire Station)
- “5 Sailor Warriors (Lemon)” — near the Keio Nakadori shopping street
This March, “10 Sailor Warriors (Sakura)” was added near Tokyo Midtown, and now the series has reached the “10 Sailor Warriors (Rainbow)” installation near JR Takanawa Gateway Station — bringing the total of special manhole cover designs in the Minato district to seven.
Events and Giveaways
The Minato Tourism Information Center at Fudanotsuji Square 1F continues to distribute “Manhole Cards” featuring the “Sailor Moon & Tuxedo Mask” design to interested visitors on an ongoing basis. To commemorate the new installation, the display period for life-size replicas of the first five special designs has been extended through September 30.
Furthermore, starting May 27, “Manhole Maps” showing the locations of all manhole covers will be distributed at various spots including Fudanotsuji Square and the Minato Tourism Information Center at the Toranomon Hills area.
