ภาพหน้าจอจากเกม Stranger Than Heaven แสดงฉากเปิดเรื่องในยุคญี่ปุ่นโบราณ

Sega took to a special Tokyo Game Show livestream on Wednesday to unveil a new video for Stranger Than Heaven, the latest title from Ryu ga Gotoku Studio (formerly codenamed “Project Century”). The roughly 10-minute clip covers the game’s opening credits sequence, then walks viewers through its various historical eras and locations, the Showbiz Lounge, the combat system, and other in-game activities.

The team also confirmed that the game’s theme song, “Stranger Than Heaven”, performed by Snoop Dogg, Satoshi Fujihara, Ado, and Tori Kelly, will be released this year.

Eras and Locations

The game spans several pivotal decades of Japan’s modern history across the following settings:

  • Kokura, Fukuoka — 1915
  • Kure, Hiroshima — 1929
  • Minami, Osaka — 1943
  • Atami, Shizuoka — 1951
  • Kamurocho (the fictional district inspired by Kabukicho, a recurring location in the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series), Shinjuku, Tokyo — 1965

Story

Sega describes the game as “a 50-year saga of those with nowhere to go and their desperate struggle to find a home.” The story begins in 1915 San Francisco, where a young boy named Makoto Daito — born to an American father and a Japanese mother — stows away on a mysterious ship. Facing harsh discrimination because of his Asian heritage and having lost both parents, Makoto sets sail for Japan, his mother’s homeland, only to discover that the voyage across the Pacific is far from a free ride, and that this single decision will alter the course of his life forever.

Bunta Sugawara’s CG Likeness

Sega issued a special statement regarding the character Genzo Iwaki, whose appearance is modeled on the late legendary actor Bunta Sugawara. The company stated that it received formal consent from Sugawara’s family, and that Toei Company — which produced many of his films, including the Battles Without Honor and Humanity series — provided archival footage and photographs that RGG Studio used to craft the CG character design.

Netflix Live-Action Film

Stranger Than Heaven is also inspiring a live-action film adaptation coming to Netflix.
