AnimEigo and MediaOCD jointly announced last Thursday that they will release a restored high-definition (HD) Blu-ray Disc edition of Vampire Princess Miyu, the four-episode OVA released from 1988 to 1989 and adapted from the manga by Narumi Kakinouchi. The release is scheduled for “on or before September 8” and will be sold exclusively through MediaOCD’s website.
Why Is It Being Released This Way?
MediaOCD explained that it had submitted the package design to Japan for approval, but copyright issues prevented the approval process from moving forward, and there has been no progress for more than a year. MediaOCD also discovered that AnimEigo’s license for the title expires next year, leading the company to say it has “almost no time left for an official release.”
As a result, MediaOCD decided to release the anime on home video only through its own website, using a blank case and blank slipcase with no images or design work in order to avoid the need for artwork approval.
Pre-Orders Are Open
Pre-orders are now open on the MediaOCD website. MediaOCD added that if it is able to secure approval for a “full” packaged release in the future, the company will “figure out a way” for existing buyers to receive that packaging without having to purchase the title again.
First Time in HD
This release marks the first time in history that the Vampire Princess Miyu OVA will be available in HD. The Blu-ray set will include both the AnimEigo English dub and the Manga UK English dub, which are separate versions.
The OVA was co-directed by Toshihiro Hirano, also known as Toshiki Hirano, the husband of Kakinouchi and later a co-creator of the original manga. AnimEigo previously announced plans for this HD release in February 2025, and the company had released the series on VHS, LaserDisc, and DVD in the past.
