The official website for the anime film project Wasted Chef formally opened last Sunday, revealing the first teaser trailer and announcing a manga adaptation that will begin serialization in Kadokawa’s Young Ace magazine on June 4. Aero05 will draw the manga adaptation.
The film is directed by Takayuki Hirao, known for works such as Magical Sisters Yoyo & Nene. The project was first announced in June 2023. The film’s teaser visual features the tagline “That day, ‘you’ and ‘taste’ disappeared from the world.”
Story Overview
Variety reported that the film is scheduled to be completed in 2027, and described the story as follows: a young chef searching for a lost sense of taste arrives in a ruined city devoid of any flavor. He is helped by a young woman named Kasumi, and his cooking gradually awakens forgotten memories. However, a mysterious dark power threatens to erase all desire, making this journey the last hope to save two worlds.
Appearance in the Annecy Animation Showcase
Wasted Chef is also one of the in-production animated works from around the world presented in the Annecy Animation Showcase. The event is part of the “Cannes Animation” program held from May 15-17 under the Marché du Film film market at the Cannes Film Festival.
