Yoshihiro Nishimura (吉弘 西村), Japanese film director and special makeup effects artist, passed away last Monday at the age of 59. According to Variety, he had been hospitalized for nearly two weeks before his death, due to liver disease.

Background and Special Effects Work

Nishimura was born in Tokyo on April 1, 1967. He became widely recognized in the Japanese film industry for his expertise in prosthetic modeling and special effects. His credits as a collaborator span numerous productions, including Shin Godzilla, the live-action film adaptation of Attack on Titan, Death Note: L, change the WorLd, and director Sion Sono’s Suicide Club.

He also founded his own special effects company, Nishimura Eizo Co., Ltd., and served as a producer and special effects consultant for other directors, such as Kengo Kaji’s Samurai Princess.

Directorial Work in Sci-Fi Horror

As a director, Nishimura built a celebrated name through visceral sci-fi splatter films, most notably Tokyo Gore Police (東京残酷警察), which earned strong acclaim at international film festivals throughout 2007 before receiving a domestic Japan release in 2008. He continued to direct and co-direct B-movie genre films in both splatter and comedy-horror, including:

  • Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl
  • Helldriver
  • Mutant Girls Squad

Final Project

At the time of his passing, Nishimura was working as director and co-writer on the film Geisha War, which is currently in post-production. No announcement has been made regarding how the project will proceed.

The loss of Yoshihiro Nishimura is a major blow to the Japanese film industry — particularly in the realm of independent cinema brimming with creative vision and his unmistakable personal style.
