A prestigious art project uniting the iconic manga Captain Tsubasa with Kanazawa Haku — the traditional gold-leaf craft of Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture — returns for its second installment. This time, the spotlight falls on fan-favourite rival Hyuga Kojiro, immortalised in a piece titled “不屈の猛虎 覚悟の刻 – The Moment of Resolve.” Pre-orders open on a first-come, first-served basis from June 15, 2026.
Captain Tsubasa: A Legacy Still in Motion
Created by Yoichi Takahashi and serialised in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1981 to 1988, Captain Tsubasa follows the journey of prodigious footballer Ozora Tsubasa as he transfers to Nankatsu Elementary and grows through fierce rivalries with the likes of Wakabayashi Genzo and Hyuga Kojiro. The series continues to this day — its latest chapter, Captain Tsubasa Rising Sun FINALS, runs on the manga app “Yanjan+” — and has sold over 90 million copies domestically. Its anime adaptations have inspired generations of young footballers around the world.
Shared Spirit: Gold Leaf and the Captain Tsubasa Story
Kanazawa’s entsuke kinpaku (edge-attached gold leaf) has been handed down for more than 400 years, shaped by the dedication, perseverance, and dreams of countless artisans. That spirit maps perfectly onto Captain Tsubasa’s central theme of rising every time you fall. The collaboration’s second chapter is built on that shared DNA: effort, challenge, and dreams.
Hyuga Kojiro: The Self-Made Rival
Unlike the protagonist Tsubasa, Hyuga Kojiro did not grow up in comfortable circumstances. He carved his own path forward through hardship and adversity, making him one of the series’ most beloved characters. Series creator Yoichi Takahashi commented on the new work:
“Hyuga was created as a rival with qualities completely opposite to Tsubasa’s. He has a different kind of appeal, and I’d be happy if fans love that about him. Because I always pictured him in black and white, I drew him in ink. The scene depicts the moment Hyuga joins Juventus and takes on Italy’s Serie A — I hope viewers can feel that ‘Let’s do this!’ determination in his expression and atmosphere.”
