The animated feature film Hanryokusho ga Akeru Hi ni (花緑青が明ける日に) has claimed the Jury Award in the Contrechamp section at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival 2026, marking a major international milestone for the production.
A Feature Debut from a Nihonga Painter
The film is the first feature-length animation from Yoshitoshi Shinomiya, a painter working in the traditional Japanese Nihonga style who has previously contributed to works by directors Makoto Shinkai and Sunao Katabuchi. Shinomiya serves as original creator, screenwriter, and director, among other roles.
The Contrechamp section recognises animation that prioritises originality and experimental approaches, celebrating works that are distinctive and unconventional.
Director’s Statement at the Ceremony
Shinomiya attended the awards ceremony in person and commented:
“At a time when environmental and energy issues are becoming increasingly serious, I hope this film can be an opportunity for everyone here to think together about what role entertainment and art can play — and whether they can continue to play that role.”
A new piece of key visual artwork drawn by Shinomiya especially for the occasion was also unveiled alongside the announcement.
Story and Cast
Set against the backdrop of a fireworks factory facing forced relocation due to urban redevelopment, the film unfolds over two days and centres on a legendary firework known as “Shuhari” and the young people who grew up in the surrounding neighbourhood.
- Rikyu Hagiwara and Kotone Furukawa star as the dual leads.
