Bandai Namco Pictures officially announced on Friday that a new anime film, Aikatsu Stars! Hoshiboshi no Progress (The Progress of the Stars), will open in early spring 2027. The film is being produced to mark the 10th anniversary of the Aikatsu Stars! anime, which first premiered in April 2016.
Original Creative Team Reunites
The film brings back the core staff from the original television series. Teruo Sato, who directed the Aikatsu Stars! TV anime, returns to the director’s chair at Bandai Namco Pictures. Original head writer Yūko Kakihara is back to pen the film’s screenplay, and original character designer Yukiko Aikei returns to handle character designs once again.
About Aikatsu Stars!
The Aikatsu Stars! television anime series aired on TV Tokyo and affiliated channels from April 2016 to March 2018, spanning 100 episodes. An anime film for the series also opened in August 2016.
The Aikatsu! Franchise
The Aikatsu! franchise launched with an arcade card game in October 2012, which inspired a television anime that ran from 2012 to 2016 along with three anime films. Following Aikatsu Stars!, the franchise continued with several successive projects:
- Aikatsu Friends! — April 2018 to September 2019
- Aikatsu on Parade! — October 2019 to July 2020
- Aikatsu! Planet — a hybrid anime/live-action series from January to June 2021, with an anime film in July 2022
- Aikatsu! Academy! — the franchise’s first YouTube-exclusive VTuber project, launched in July 2024, with no associated TV anime or arcade card game
The franchise previously celebrated the 10th anniversary of the original Aikatsu! series with the film Aikatsu! 10th Story ~Mirai e no Starway~ (Starway to the Future), which opened in Japan in January 2023. That film reunited director Ryuichi Kimura, scenario writer Yoichi Kato, and character designer Hiroko Yaguchi, with the story set within the continuity of the 2012–2016 anime and centering on protagonist Ichigo Hoshinomiya.
