Kadokawa released a new teaser trailer and promotional visual for The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 5 on Saturday, confirming a 2027 premiere window and revealing the season’s production staff. Crunchyroll also debuted the same teaser and visual during its panel at Anime Expo on Friday, announcing that it will stream the upcoming season.

Series History
The Rising of the Shield Hero anime first aired as a two-hour special in January 2019, running for 25 episodes with Crunchyroll simulcasting the series. The Rising of the Shield Hero 2 premiered in April 2022, followed by Season 3 in October 2023, which ran for 12 episodes.
Source Material
The anime is based on the original light novel series by Yusagi Aneko and a manga adaptation by Aiya Kyu, both published in English by One Peace Books. The story follows Naofumi Iwatani, an otaku who is suddenly summoned to a parallel world and discovers he is one of four legendary heroes tasked with saving it from prophesied destruction. As the Shield Hero — the weakest of the four — he is quickly betrayed and left with nothing but his shield, and must fight to rise and prove himself.

The franchise has also expanded into gaming. Kadokawa released the RPG Maker MV title The Rising of the Shield Hero: Relive The Animation on PC via Steam in 2019, and Jupiter launched the picture crossword puzzle game PICROSS Records of The Shield Hero for Nintendo Switch in October 2024.
