The Sword Art Online franchise officially announced on Tuesday that its new original anime film will be titled Sword Art Online -Integral Domain-, with a theatrical release scheduled for 2028.
An Original Story Beyond Alicization
The film is based on an original story by series creator Reki Kawahara and is set after the events of the Sword Art Online: Alicization arc. Both previous announcements of the project described it as a story not found in the original source material.

- Haruka Tomatsu returns as the voice of Asuna
Shingo Adachi, who served as chief animation director on Sword Art Online and Sword Art Online II, is directing the film at A-1 Pictures and Psyde Kick Studio. Yumiko Yamamoto, known for her character design work on Yohane the Parhelion -SUNSHINE in the MIRROR- and Sword Art Online: Alicization – War of Underworld, is handling character design. Animec will distribute the film.
A Project Years in the Making
The project was first announced in November 2022 at “Sword Art Online -Full Dive-,” an event celebrating the 10th anniversary of the SAO anime franchise alongside the online launch of the fictional in-story game. More recently, the “Yuna First Live” concert on April 29 closed with a teaser for the film, once again describing it as an all-new story outside the original work.
About the Sword Art Online Franchise
Reki Kawahara began the Sword Art Online web novel in 2001, serializing it on his personal website from 2002 to 2008. Kadokawa’s Dengeki Bunko label began publishing a revised print edition in 2009, concluding the original “Alicization” arc with volume 18 in 2016. The series continued with the all-new “Moon Cradle” arc in 2017 and the “Unital Ring” arc in 2018, and has now reached its 29th volume. The franchise has spawned novel and manga spinoffs, a multi-season television anime, an anime film, and a proposed live-action series. The Sword Art Online: Progressive spinoff novels have also been adapted into two anime films.
Echoes of Aincrad Launches This July
Alongside the film news, the new action RPG Echoes of Aincrad, based on the SAO franchise, is set to launch in Japan on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on July 9, and on PC via Steam on July 10. Western players on all platforms can expect the game on July 10.
