The theatrical anime film Eiga Chiikawa: Ningyo no Shima no Himitsu (Chiikawa the Movie: Secret of the Mermaid Island) has confirmed a simultaneous IMAX release alongside its standard screenings on opening day, July 24, 2026. A dedicated IMAX poster was also unveiled alongside the announcement.
The new poster features Chiikawa, Hachiware, and Usagi bursting well beyond the edges of the frame in full “MAX” fashion, capturing the larger-than-life spirit of the IMAX format. Venues screening the film in IMAX can be found on the official movie website.
Story
The film adapts the fan-favourite long-form arc known as the “Siren Arc” — one of the most substantial storylines in Nagano’s original manga — under Nagano’s complete supervision. When Chiikawa and friends are invited to a remote island and treated to an enthusiastic welcome, their sightseeing trip takes an unexpected turn as the islanders ask them to help defeat the Siren terrorising their home.
