Pokémon fans in Japan are in for a nostalgic treat: Pokémon the Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back (劇場版ポケットモンスター ミュウツーの逆襲), originally released in 1998, along with the companion short Pikachu’s Summer Vacation (ピカチュウのなつやすみ), will be screened on 35mm film at Futaba Gakusha in Hyogo Prefecture on August 11, 2026.
About the Films
Mewtwo Strikes Back was the first theatrical Pokémon film, spun off from the TV anime series that began airing in 1997. Pikachu’s Summer Vacation is the short that accompanied it in cinemas, following Pikachu and friends as a visit to Pokémon Plaza turns into a squabble with Raichu, Cubone, Marill, and Snubbull.
Screening Schedule
The event, titled 真夏のアニメ上映会 (“Midsummer Anime Screening”), will run three sessions on the same day:
- Session 1 (Morning): 10:00–11:45 (Doors open 9:45)
- Session 2 (Afternoon): 12:15–14:00 (Doors open 12:00)
- Session 3 (Late Afternoon): 14:30–16:15 (Doors open 14:15)

- Children (18 and under): ¥1,000
Tickets are currently on sale. The event is organized by CINEMA HIROMA, hosted and sponsored by Futaba Gakusha, with film projection handled by the Hyogo Prefectural Film Center. Illustrations are by Asano Peco, design by Tsukamura Ryosuke, and special cooperation provided by Palcinema Shinkoen.
