About the Fatal Fury Franchise

Fatal Fury (known in Japan as Garō Densetsu) is one of SNK’s most storied fighting game franchises, serving as the birthplace of iconic characters like Terry Bogard, Andy Bogard, Mai Shiranui, Blue Mary, and Geese Howard. The original Fatal Fury: King of Fighters debuted in arcades in 1991, and the previous entry, Garou: Mark of the Wolves, launched in 1999 — making City of the Wolves the first new installment in over two decades. SNK first announced the game at the EVO fighting game tournament in 2022.

SNK’s The King of Fighters series also has its roots in Fatal Fury, having begun as a crossover between the Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting franchises before growing into its own long-running series.

The Anime Legacy

The Fatal Fury franchise inspired three anime productions: the Fatal Fury: Legend of the Hungry Wolf OVA (1992), the Fatal Fury 2: The New Battle OVA (1993), and Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture (1994). All three feature character designs by Masami Ōbari, who also directed the third entry. Discotek Media has released all three titles.
