Summer 2026 anime Kimi ga Shinu made Koi wo Shitai (I Want to Love You Until You Die) aired its third episode, titled “Friends,” on July 21, 2026. What seemed like a heartwarming slice-of-life episode quickly turned into something far more unsettling, prompting viewers to warn one another: “First-timers, be very careful about spoilers!”

About the Series

The series is based on a manga by Aono Nachi, serialized on Ichijinsha’s manga website “Ichijin Plus.” Set in an orphanage that doubles as a military magic-weapon training facility, the story follows girls who attend classes on killing, living alongside death without even being allowed to grieve. Amid this bleak existence, the series portrays their pure, bittersweet love and will to live.

The protagonist is Totsuki Shina, a 14-year-old who struggles to accept a life so close to death. She encounters Kagari Mimi, rumored to be the “school’s secret weapon” — a girl who looks young and adorable, with a cheerful, innocent personality.

Cast

The voice cast, who previously appeared in commemorative PVs for volumes 4 (June 2021) and 6 (January 2023) of the manga, return for the anime adaptation:

One Month as Roommates

Episode 3 opens one month after Shina and Mimi became roommates. Despite her fearsome reputation as the school’s “secret weapon,” Mimi’s daily life is charmingly chaotic — she loses socks, has perpetually messy hair, eats everything without complaint, aces history exams but struggles with math, and heads to the battlefield with a smile every time she’s called up. Shina is slowly coming to understand Mimi, but still doesn’t know how to look at her when she leaves for war.

One day, classmate Ali asks bluntly: “Do you dislike Mimi?” Shina says she doesn’t, but she’s still unsettled by Mimi’s cheerful march toward the battlefield.

Mimi’s Body, Reassembled

Late one night, school physician Fran receives a blood-soaked bag containing severed limbs and hair. She mutters “this is rough” and tells it to “heal itself” — whereupon the flesh regenerates into Mimi. Viewers were stunned: “She can come back even in pieces?! Mimi is invincible!” “It’s like Frankenstein’s monster.” “Seeing it animated makes it so much more violent.” Fran herself remarks, “No matter how many times I see it, it’s disgusting.”

ReoNa, who performs the opening theme Amore and was watching the broadcast live, posted on social media: “The bag…… in pieces……”

A First Friend

Shina had made onigiri to wait for Mimi’s return, even while privately admitting she found Mimi frightening. When Mimi arrives, Shina apologizes for having been cold and thanks her for healing her arm with restoration magic. As Mimi happily munches the onigiri, Shina asks where she was before transferring to the school. “I was underground,” Mimi replies. “A dark place, alone the whole time.” Shina hesitates, then asks: “Would you… be my friend?” Mimi throws her arms around Shina and cries, “My first friend ever!”

A Day Off and a Very Messy Room

On their first day off as friends, Mimi innocently asks, “What do friends do on days off?” Shina explains: eat snacks, chat, celebrate birthdays, help each other out, share secrets you can’t tell anyone else. Then she glances around Mimi’s room and adds, “I think this place is a little too messy.” Online reactions ranged from shock at the state of the room to admiration for Shina, with comments like “Shina is basically her mom” and “She’s more of a parent than a friend.” The day off became a cleaning day — and in an anime-original addition, Seiran and Ali came to help, which fans were delighted by.

Original manga author Aono Nachi posted: “The cleaning scene is too cute…!” ReoNa replied: “It really is…! We got to see everyone’s casual clothes too, this week is too precious…”

“Mimi Will Never Die…?”

Once the room was tidy, Fran arrived to summon Mimi to the battlefield again. A worried Shina was told by Fran: “I’ll tell you just this one thing — don’t worry, Mimi will never die.” The line sent viewers into a spin: some celebrated (“Great news — Mimi won’t die!”), while others wondered, “Does that mean she’s truly immortal?” and “Was it okay to just tell her that?”

Mimi’s Secret

Shina waited up all night for Mimi to return. When Mimi finally came home at dawn, she spotted the bed Shina had prepared and dived in with a cheerful “Bai~n!” In high spirits, Mimi said: “Friends share secrets they can’t tell anyone else, right? I’ll tell you tomorrow — Mimi’s secret.”

Fans laughed at “Bai~n” (rendered as “boing” in the English subtitles), but the word “secret” filled them with dread: “Nothing but bad feelings about this…”

The next day, Mimi led Shina by the hand to a bench in the school courtyard, checked that no one was nearby, and whispered: “Promise you won’t tell anyone…” before revealing her secret.

The revelation sent the internet into an uproar. “That gave me chills.” “What does that even mean?” “It changes how you read the title.” “Which one of them is the title referring to?” “I’m scared to see what comes next…” Voice actress Hidaka Rina posted after the broadcast: “That ending… another incredible finish.”

ReoNa wrote: “Just as I was left speechless, the ending theme Éternel hit me right in the heart…!” sana, vocalist of sajou no hana who performs Éternel, added: “I was smiling watching Shina and Mimi’s conversation, then the ending completely shocked me…”

Viewers were left with a mix of excitement and anxiety: “I thought Shina was the protagonist, but could it actually be Mimi?” “Give me the next episode now — I’m dying of curiosity!” “Episode 3 and it’s still delivering shocks — it gets better every week.”

Animation studio ROLL2 released key animation frames from the final scene, featuring Mimi and Shina together alongside Seiran and Ali.

Kimi ga Shinu made Koi wo Shitai airs every Tuesday at 21:30 on AT-X, and at 24:30 on KBS Kyoto, Sun TV, and BS11. WOWOW began broadcasting the series from July 14 every Tuesday at 24:00. Streaming is available simultaneously with the broadcast every Tuesday at 21:30 on dAnime Store, U-NEXT, and Anime Hōdai, with wider streaming availability beginning every Friday at 24:00.
