The staff of the Chainsmoker Cat (Yanineko) television anime, based on the manga by Nyan Nyan Factory serialized in Kodansha’s Young Magazine, announced on Wednesday that Niina Nakabayashi has joined the cast as Jikaki Neko. The character makes her debut in the preview for the fourth episode, which drops on Thursday.

Two Versions of the Anime

The anime is available in two distinct versions: the “Evil Dragon Unleashed” version, which honors the full directorial vision of the source material, and the “On-Air” version, edited for terrestrial television broadcast. The “Evil Dragon Unleashed” version is accessible via the AT-X premium channel and the AnimeFesta, DMM TV, Fuji TV On Demand, Hulu, Netflix, and Anime Times streaming platforms in Japan — with AnimeFesta and Anime Times also carrying the “On-Air” cut. Sixteen additional Japanese streaming services carry only the “On-Air” version. Internationally, OceanVeil streams the “Evil Dragon Unleashed” version.

Synopsis

The original manga is known for its toilet humor, gross-out comedy, and characters who regularly consume drugs and/or alcohol. Set in a world where humans, catgirls, and similar species coexist, the story follows Yani Neko, a catgirl with a severe smoking addiction. Her apartment reeks of ash and is strewn with cigarette butts and general filth. Every time she tries to quit, she caves to her cravings almost immediately. Publisher Seven Seas, which releases the manga in English, poses the central question: will she ever get her life together, or is she doomed to be a chainsmoking slob forever?
