The manager of special effects artist and musician Screaming Mad George (real name: Jōji Tani) announced via X/Twitter on Monday that he passed away on February 10 of this year at the age of 69. He is survived by his wife Miki and daughter Alice.
From Punk Rock to Hollywood Practical Effects Legend
Screaming Mad George first made his name as a punk rock musician with the band The Mad, where he crafted elaborate gore-filled music videos and stage performances. He later relocated to New York to study visual arts, eventually establishing himself as one of Hollywood’s most distinctive practical effects artists.
His effects work appeared in a string of iconic films, including:
- Predator
- Big Trouble in Little China
- A Nightmare on Elm Street 3
- A Nightmare on Elm Street 4
He forged a long creative partnership with director Brian Yuzna beginning with Society (1989), which led to further collaborations on Silent Night, Deadly Night 4, Bride of Re-Animator, The Dentist 2, and Faust: Love of the Damned.
Contributions to Anime and Otaku Culture
Within otaku circles, Screaming Mad George is perhaps best remembered as the director of The Guyver (1991), the live-action film adaptation of Yoshiki Takaya‘s Bio-Booster Armor Guyver manga, produced by his frequent collaborator Brian Yuzna.
His ties to Japanese genre properties ran deeper still: he handled special effects for Tokyo: The Last War, the second live-action film based on Hiroshi Aramata‘s Teito Monogatari novel, and designed the Cherubim monster featured in the second episode of the Spirit Warrior OVA.
He is also credited as co-translator, alongside Yoko Umezawa, of Hideshi Hino‘s Panorama of Hell, published by Blast Books in 1993.
