BS12 Twellv is airing a free eight-week Mobile Suit Gundam film marathon as part of its weekly Sunday Anime Theater (日曜アニメ劇場) slot, broadcast every Sunday at 7:00 p.m. The run kicked off on August 9 with the original Mobile Suit Gundam theatrical film, and five more titles are lined up through the end of September.
August 30 — Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan’s Island (Free TV Premiere)
Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan’s Island receives its free-to-air television premiere on August 30. The film is based on Episode 15 of the original Mobile Suit Gundam TV series. Amuro and his crew are dispatched to a remote island — nicknamed the “Island of No Return” — to mop up enemy remnants and search for an abandoned spy. There they discover children who have no business being on the island, along with a single Zaku mobile suit. Amuro loses his Gundam in the ensuing battle and comes face to face with a man who calls himself Cucuruz Doan.
September — The Z Gundam Trilogy and Char’s Counterattack
September 6 — Mobile Suit Z Gundam A New Translation I: Heirs to the Stars
The first entry in the boldly restructured theatrical trilogy based on Mobile Suit Z Gundam. Set seven years after the One Year War, the story follows Camille, a young man living in a space colony who seizes the Gundam Mk-II from the elite military organization Titans and joins forces with AEUG, a group fighting for the autonomy of Space Noids.
September 13 — Mobile Suit Z Gundam A New Translation II: Lovers
The second film in the trilogy focuses on the fateful encounter between Camille and Four, and depicts Camille taking up the new mobile suit Zeta Gundam as his weapon of choice.
September 20 — Mobile Suit Z Gundam A New Translation III: Love is the Pulse of the Stars
The concluding chapter of the trilogy brings the war between the Titans and AEUG to its climax and delivers the final fates of Camille and his comrades.
September 27 — Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack
Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack was director Yoshiyuki Tomino‘s first original feature-length theatrical film in the Gundam franchise. Amuro pilots his Gundam while Char takes the controls of his red mobile suit Sazabi as the two rivals clash to settle their long-running conflict once and for all. Though the ultimate fate of both characters is left ambiguous, the film delivers a definitive final battle between them. Produced with over 100,000 animation cels and cutting-edge CG technology for its time, it stands as a fitting grand finale to the storyline that began with the One Year War.
