The official website for the live-action adaptation of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s one-shot manga Look Back released a new clip on Friday. The footage spotlights the film’s two leads, Kyōmoto and Fujino, as they work together to create manga.
Synopsis
The 79th Cannes International Film Festival, which showcased the film on May 15, describes it as a tender coming-of-age story spanning more than a decade. Fujino, a gifted aspiring manga artist, meets Kyōmoto, a shy admirer of her work. Though seemingly opposites, the two form the perfect creative partnership through their shared love of manga. But as their work earns praise and attention, they face decisions that threaten their artistic collaboration. Director Hirokazu Kore-eda crafts the story as a beautiful love letter to friendship and the creative process.

Special Guest Staff
Musician Kenshi Yonezu, actress and singer Tōko Miura, and animator-director Yōko Kuno are all taking on special guest staff roles. Yonezu will perform guitar for the film under the credit “Shark Kick Guitar,” while Miura will provide vocals for an insert song. Kuno will direct a rotoscoped animation sequence based on their performance, with Shinei Animation producing the animated segment.
Release & Festival Dates
The film opens in Japan on September 11. It will also screen at the London Film Festival in October. GKIDS will release the film theatrically in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Ireland in 2026.
Background: Manga and Anime Film
Fujimoto’s original one-shot manga debuted on Shueisha’s Shonen Jump+ in July 2021, racking up over 2.5 million views on its first day alone. Viz Media and MANGA Plus released it digitally in English, and Viz Media published a print edition in September 2022.
An anime film adaptation preceded this live-action version, opening in Japan in June 2024. It debuted at #2 in ticket sales but topped weekend earnings, selling 135,000 tickets and grossing ¥227 million (approximately US$1.40 million) in its first three days. GKIDS screened the anime film in North America in October 2024, where it earned US$688,253 in its opening weekend.
Fujimoto is also the creator of Chainsaw Man (and Fire Punch). Chainsaw Man launched in Weekly Shonen Jump in December 2018; its first part, the “Kōan” (Public Safety) arc, concluded in December 2020. The second part, “Gakkō-hen” (School Arc), began on Shonen Jump+ in July 2022 and wrapped up on March 24 (March 25 in Japan).
