A brand-new piece of merchandise for fans of Ranma 1/2 has arrived: the 「らんま1/2 ギュギュっと！ハンカチくじ」 (“Ranma 1/2 Gyugyu! Handkerchief Lottery”), a set of compressed handkerchiefs that expand when wet. The items went on sale from 9 September 2026 at bookstores, variety shops, and online retailers across Japan.
The Gimmick: Just Add Water
Each handkerchief comes tightly compressed into a small, flat package. Peel off the film, gently soak it in water or warm water while loosening the fibres, and it expands into a full 24 × 24 cm handkerchief. The water-triggered transformation is a neat nod to the series’ central conceit of characters changing form when splashed.
Six Designs, Including One Secret
The lineup covers six colourful designs featuring fan-favourite characters — Ranma, Akane, Shampoo, and Ryoga among them — each showcasing memorable expressions and iconic scenes from the anime. One of the six designs is a secret: the pattern is hidden until the package is opened, giving buyers a lottery-style thrill with every purchase.
About Ranma 1/2
Ranma 1/2 is a martial-arts romantic comedy manga by Rumiko Takahashi, the creator behind Urusei Yatsura, Maison Ikkoku, Inuyasha, Kyōkai no RINNE, and MAO. It ran in Weekly Shōnen Sunday from 1987 to 1996 and remains enormously popular to this day.
A brand-new anime adaptation produced by MAPPA under director Kōnosuke Uda launched its first season in October 2024, with original cast members Kappei Yamaguchi (male Ranma), Megumi Hayashibara (female Ranma), and Noriko Hidaka (Akane Tendo) all returning. A third season is set to air in October 2026.
