GKIDS, the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, and Variety’s Animation is Film festival announced on Tuesday that two anime films have been selected for the festival’s competition lineup: Cherry and Virgin, directed by Masanao Kawajiri, and ghost – end of night (ghost/yoru no hate), helmed by Shingo Natsume and produced by Madhouse. The festival will also host a special screening of the classic anime film Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust.

The Animation is Film festival will run from October 16 to 19 at the TCL Chinese Theatres in Hollywood.
Cherry and Virgin
Cherry and Virgin is set to open in 2027. The project was first announced in 2021 and had originally been slated for a 2022 release. The film earned a “Special Mention of the Jury” in the Satoshi Kon Award for Excellence in Animation section at the 30th Fantasia International Film Festival in 2026, which also hosted the film’s world premiere in its Animation Plus section.
In addition to Animation is Film, Cherry and Virgin is also screening at the 39th Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF), which will take place in Tokyo’s Hibiya-Yurakucho-Marunouchi-Ginza area from October 26 to November 4.
ghost – end of night
ghost – end of night is scheduled to open in Japan on February 11, 2027. A manga adaptation illustrated by artist himiko began serialization in Kadokawa’s Young Ace magazine on August 4. Like Cherry and Virgin, the film is also part of the TIFF 39 lineup.
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust Special Screenings via GKIDS
GKIDS will present the Japanese-language version of Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust with English subtitles in select screenings this fall, ahead of a wider theatrical release and home entertainment release planned for 2027.
