Gekijouban Mahou Shoujo Madoka☆Magica: Walpurgis no Kaiten has set a new franchise record at the Japanese box office. As of September 23 — the film’s 27th day in theaters — it has drawn a cumulative audience of 1,262,137 and earned a total of 2,102,605,880 yen (approximately 2.1 billion yen), surpassing the 2.08 billion yen record previously held by Gekijouban Mahou Shoujo Madoka☆Magica [Shinpen] Hangyaku no Monogatari (2013). It is now the highest-grossing entry in the entire Madoka☆Magica series — a record that stood for 13 years.
Strong Momentum From Opening Day
The film opened nationwide in Japan on August 28 and immediately topped the weekend box-office rankings in both admissions and revenue. It crossed the 1 billion yen mark in just four days and reached 1.5 billion yen within ten days — a faster pace than Hangyaku no Monogatari. Cumulative admissions surpassed 1 million within 17 days of release.
Online buzz has also been a major driver. From September 12, the production officially lifted its spoiler embargo on new characters, prompting a wave of fan reactions, theories, and in-depth discussions across social media platforms.
Expanded Screening Formats
Dolby Cinema screenings began on September 18, adding a premium audio-visual option alongside standard showings. On October 3 — the in-universe birthday of Kaname Madoka — the film will also launch in 4DX and MX4D, giving audiences even more ways to experience the story.
During the film’s fifth week in theaters (September 26–October 2), cinemagoers will receive a specially drawn postcard by Shaft (105×148 mm) while supplies last; designs cannot be chosen.
Story & Staff
Walpurgis no Kaiten is a direct sequel to Hangyaku no Monogatari, picking up from that film’s shocking ending. In the new world created by Akemi Homura — who became a demon out of her devotion to Madoka — the magical girls descend once more, and the gears of the Madoka☆Magica universe slowly begin to turn again.
