The beloved TV anime Sore Ike! Anpanman (それいけ！アンパンマン) is set to mark its 39th anniversary on October 3, a date officially designated as “Anpanman Day.” To celebrate, the series will air a special episode — the 1,747th entry in the series — on October 2, one day ahead of the milestone.
About the Special Episode
Titled “Shiratama-san to Kurayamiman” (しらたまさんとくらやみまん), the episode centers on top star Shiratama-san, who is organizing a hero show. Characters including Shokupanman, Currypanman, Melonpanna-chan, Creampanda, Kabao, and Chibizou all throw themselves into rehearsals. However, Shiratama-san is dissatisfied with the casting of the villain role — the Demon King, the hero’s greatest foe — and personally steps in to choose who will fill it. To make matters more complicated, the sinister Kurayamiman appears just as everyone is busy with final preparations.
Director’s Comment
Director Nagaoka Akinori shared a comment about the episode:
“Yanase-sensei was a manga artist, picture-book author, lyricist, poet, and a multi-talented figure in stage art, composition, and direction. Seeing Shiratama-san agonize over how to make a new show bring joy to everyone — it really reminds me of Yanase-sensei himself.”
Sore Ike! Anpanman first began broadcasting in 1988 and has remained one of Japan’s most enduring and beloved anime series for families and young children ever since.
