TV Asahi announced on Thursday that Yoshinori Kobayashi‘s beloved manga Obocchama-kun is getting a brand-new television anime titled Obocchama-kun Reborn, slated to premiere in 2027. The announcement was accompanied by the release of a teaser promotional video and a first visual.

Original Voice Actress Returns

Chie Kōjiro, who voiced the protagonist Obocchama-kun in the original 1989 anime, is reprising the role for the new series.

A Japan-India Joint Production

The new anime is a co-production between Japan and India. Green Gold Animation is leading production, with cooperation from Shinei Animation and Sony Pictures Networks India — both of which collaborated on the India-produced 2025 anime adaptation. The new series will adapt manga chapters that were never covered in the original anime, alongside entirely new stories developed under the supervision of series creator Kobayashi.

About the Original Anime and Manga

The original Obocchama-kun anime ran in Japan from 1989 to 1992 for a total of 164 episodes. The story follows Obo Cchama, the outrageously crude heir to the wealthy Obo family, as he enrolls at the elite Denenchofu Academy. The series is an upper-class comedy built around Cchama’s eccentric elementary school circle, including:

  • Kakino Shuhei — the first friend Cchama makes without the help of money
  • Ojo Samayo — Cchama’s fiancée, whose family runs the Ojo Company
  • Fukurokoji Kanemitsu — heir to a family nearly as wealthy as the Obos
  • Binbo Taijo (Binbocchama) — a proud boy whose family was once well-off

The original anime also aired on a children’s channel in India and was dubbed into Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu.

Kobayashi’s manga originally ran in Shogakukan’s CoroCoro Comic magazine from 1986 to 1994, with Shogakukan collecting it into 24 compiled volumes.

The 2025 India-Targeted Anime

In September 2024, TV Asahi announced a separate new anime adaptation aimed specifically at the Indian market, which launched in 2025. That project was carried out with Sony Pictures Networks India — a local subsidiary of Sony Group — with Shinei Animation handling the scenario under Kobayashi’s supervision and animation production taking place in India. The series ran for 26 episodes targeting children aged 6–11 and aired on the Sony YAY! channel.
