With Magic Knight Rayearth — one of CLAMP’s most iconic works — set to return as a new anime series more than 30 years after its debut, airing from October 7 with a main cast including Ayane Sakura, Rumi Okubo, and Rie Takahashi, now feels like the perfect moment to revisit the broader catalogue of this legendary creative collective. Among all of CLAMP’s works, one stands out for a quality that is almost impossible to describe: xxxHOLiC.

A Strange Kind of Intoxication

There is something peculiar about watching xxxHOLiC. It makes you feel, somehow, drunk. Not literally — but there is a floating, hazy sensation to it, like the moment late at night when reality starts to feel thin, or the blurry edges of a half-remembered dream. Frightening. Mysterious. Beautiful. And yet, strangely comfortable. Among CLAMP’s many works, each with its own fierce personality, xxxHOLiC may be the one where the atmosphere itself is the greatest draw.

A Shop Where Every Wish Has Its Price

The story follows Kimihiro Watanuki, a high school student cursed with a body that attracts spirits and supernatural beings. One day he stumbles into a mysterious shop run by the bewitching Yūko Ichihara, a woman who grants the wishes of those who visit — in exchange for an equivalent price. The series is filled with lines that don’t fully land on first hearing, yet linger stubbornly in the mind. Chief among them: “There is no such thing as coincidence in this world. There is only the inevitable.”

The Real Horror Is the Human Heart

The supernatural entities in xxxHOLiC are not simply there to frighten. What the series truly puts under the microscope is something far more unsettling: the human mind. A woman who cannot stop lying. A person swallowed whole by the internet. Someone who clings to a wish so tightly it destroys them. The monsters, it turns out, are almost beside the point.

“I want to stop, but I can’t.” “I want to change, but I won’t do anything about it.” These are not fantastical scenarios — they are recognisable human patterns that transcend any era. Episodes that seemed merely atmospheric in childhood can return years later carrying an entirely different, more personal weight.

Through it all, Yūko never hands out easy answers. Draped in elaborate robes, pipe in hand, she drinks and makes impossible demands of Watanuki with an air of knowing everything while revealing nothing. Her words carry a quiet severity: wishing alone changes nothing; to gain something you must give something of equal worth; and in the end, the only one who can choose — or change — is yourself.

A Visual Language All Its Own

The look of xxxHOLiC is equally striking. Limbs stretched to impossible lengths, figures boldly distorted, a colour palette that belongs to neither shōjo nor shōnen manga — and a stillness so profound it feels as though another world is quietly opening its mouth just beside the ordinary one. The distortion, paradoxically, is what makes it feel so right. Spend enough time looking at it and your own sense of distance begins to warp, until you feel as though you yourself have wandered into Yūko’s shop.

Yet the series is never relentlessly heavy. Watanuki’s loud, comedic reactions and his bickering exchanges with classmates Shizuka Dōmeki and Himawari Kunogi provide genuine laughs — before the atmosphere pivots, almost imperceptibly, back into something that raises the hairs on your neck. It is precisely because that boundary is so blurred that viewers are drawn in without ever noticing it happening.

The World Looks Different Afterwards

When you finally step away from xxxHOLiC and back into everyday life, something has shifted. The corner of a familiar street might now seem to hide a shop you’ve never noticed. A habit you repeat without thinking might conceal an attachment you’ve never acknowledged. That lingering shift in perception — that is the particular intoxication of xxxHOLiC.

Frightening, yet impossible to leave. Haunting, yet somehow warm. And Yūko’s words keep circling long after the credits roll. Step inside this strange and beautiful world once, and you will never quite walk back out the same way.
