A new clip from the feature-length animated film Wareware wa Uchūjin was released on YouTube on October 5, offering a glimpse into the elementary school days of the story’s two central characters.
About the Film and the Clip
The film follows a friendship spanning more than 30 years between Tsubasa, a shy and introverted boy, and Kyotaro, the popular kid in class, who first meet in primary school. The newly released footage captures quiet, nostalgic moments from their childhood: lugging multiple forgotten umbrellas home on their backpacks the day before summer break, gulping down cold barley tea after arriving home, and pressing their bodies against the cool floor to beat the heat.
Director Kadowaki Kohei reportedly paid close attention to the realistic physicality of children’s movements, the seamless integration of character animation with backgrounds, and fine textural details throughout each scene.
Awards and Box Office
The film previously won the Grand Prix in the feature animation category at the 50th Ottawa International Animation Festival in Canada, one of the world’s three most prestigious animation festivals.
Currently screening at 72 theaters across Japan, the film has been gaining momentum through word of mouth. Weekday box office receipts rose for four consecutive days between September 28 and October 1, and its second-weekend earnings climbed to 112% of the first weekend’s figures.
