The manga Tabibito no Ossan, Jiyuu Kimama na Slow Life wo Okuritai no ni Sekai wo Sukutta Shin no Eiyuu dato Bareru — roughly, “The Travelling Middle-Aged Man Wants to Live a Carefree Slow Life, but Gets Exposed as the True Hero Who Saved the World” — has released its first volume today, October 7, 2026, published by Takeshobo.
The series is a manga adaptation of the original novel by Amaike Nozomu, with art by Kyogoku Toya.
Story
The protagonist, Rihito, is reincarnated into a fantasy world as a hero. At first, he is thrilled at the prospect of a real-life adventure like those he had seen in games and anime. But the harsh reality of watching people die at the hands of monsters every day leaves him no room to enjoy the otherworld he once dreamed of — only endless battle.
After finally defeating the Demon King and bringing his 10-year journey as a hero to a close, Rihito finds that he has become a middle-aged man in the process. Deciding it is never too late, he retires from his role as hero and sets out to travel the now-peaceful world at his own pace.
The story follows the former hero — finally free from his great mission — as he attempts to live a relaxed, carefree life alongside Mero, a kemonomimi (animal-eared) girl, only to repeatedly have his true identity as the world’s saviour uncovered.
